Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture 2019 will became an international tourist destination
Plovdiv scored Over 6% growth of tourists in the region for the first nine months of this year, despite the negative trend in the tourism industry for the country and almost 20 % drop of the summer tourist flow to the sea. This was announced by the Deputy Mayor Stefan Stoyanov.
Stoyanov pointed that Plovdiv has managed to maintain positive growth of tourists in recent years and can boast a better and sustainable growth of the tourism industry at all. The municipality reported that tourism is not a big part of the economy in the region, but it is one of the potential sectors to achieve rapid growth.
Number of tourists is expected to increase to over three million in 2019. Deputy Mayor is convinced that the European Capital of Culture is the main factor that will pull Plovdiv on the international scene and make it even more – a popular and important.
He pointed, however, that the flow of tourists in Plovdiv has increased significantly because of the reform in the cultural sector and extremely fast-growing cultural calendar of the city in recent years. Examples are festivals, concerts and other cultural events that have attracted three times more audience than before.
According to Stefan Stoyanov this is the real cultural tourism – good cultural product, visited by more people, coupled with well-maintained infrastructure – urban, museums and archeology, as well as special events such as the gorge of a young wine.
Wine tourism has a great potential and future in Plovdiv and the region – said Deputy Mayor Stefan Stoyanov.
